The Logistics Economics Faculty was established in October 2007. Its predecessor was the 5-year undergraduate program of Shipping Department of Water Transportation Economic Organization and Management, which was established in 1956 by Wuhan River Transportation University. In August 1963, the Ministry of Communications adjusted the majors of colleges and universities affiliated to the Ministry of Communications. The economics major of Wuhan Institute of Water Transportation Engineering was transferred to Shanghai Maritime University, and a new Department of Water Transportation Economics was formed. The major was named Water Transportation Economics and Organization.
In 1983, the Faculty began to recruit graduate students majoring in transportation economics.
In 1998, the Faculty began to recruit master's degree of international trade.
At present, the major of Economics (Maritime and Logistics Economics) in Shanghai Maritime University is the one with the most characteristics of maritime economy and logistics among the general universities in China.
