The Department of International Economics and Trade was developed from the former Department of Water Transport Economics. Its predecessor was the Department of Water Transportation Economics, which was founded in  Wuhan Water Transportation Engineering College in 1956. 

In 1963, the Faculty of Economics was established.

In 1993, renamed Faculty of International Economics and Trade.

Int'l Economics and Trade Faculty has two undergraduate programs: International Economics and Trade, Finance (Maritime Finance), and International Trade for a Master's degree.
